Order allows Woods to play Washington varsity football, for now
By ALICIA GALLEGOS
Tribune Staff Writer
SOUTH BEND — A judge has temporarily ruled against the Indiana High School Athletic Association, allowing a Washington High School senior to play on the school's varsity football team.

The IHSAA previously determined that Eric Woods only could have limited eligibility to play football and play for the junior varsity team.

The debate stems from what the IHSAA says was an improper transfer of Woods from Adams High School to Washington High School.

The IHSAA found that the teenager was recruited inappropriately and was in violation of IHSAA rules.

At a hearing today, a judge approved a temporary restraining order filed by Woods' attorney against the IHSAA. The order remains in affect for 10 days, meaning that Woods will be allowed to play in a varsity game tonight against Riley High School and next week's game against Mishawaka.

An injunction hearing for further review of the case is scheduled for Oct. 19.

This is ridiculous. The IHSAA conducted and investigation into this situation and handed a ruling. Why do we need the courts to intervene. Kids and parents know the rules, they need to follow them. We have rules for a reason. He improperly transferred and was caught, now he needs to face the consequence. Absurd.

I feel bad for the rest of the west side kids when this "temporary restraining order" expires and the next hearing determines the IHSAA acted properly - and the team forfeits what could be big wins tonight and next week.

Here we go again...when will someone finally put all this to rest. Washington should put a stop to all of these sport related issues. I wonder who keeps footing the legal bills for all this nonsense.

The times have changed---the trimesters at WHS along with the changes in the distribution of propery tax dollars is something the IHSAA is refusing to take into account. They were ruled as having acted inappropriately in another case involving WHS--how many more kids will suffer at WHS because of them and when will someone stop this blatant vendetta against WHS? I'm sick to death of reading all the anonymous posts all over every message board in South Bend with nothing but hearsay and inuendo about WHS, the Deiters, Woods and his mother and every crack-pot conspiracy theory this group of people dreams up. Man up, speak out at a school board meeting so people MIGHT take you seriously or shut up about it. If you had an ounce of genuine concern or evidence you would be at the meetings raising hell and getting results. Obviously you don't so get over it and get a life.

jackson star how would you know how good I was? The IHSAA ruled and his family is crying about it. They should have done their homework before they made any decisions. He's an average high school player, nothing more.
